Collection: Hematite

An iron oxide mineral,
known for its metallic gray surface
and high density.

Despite its dark appearance,
hematite leaves a reddish-brown streak
when powdered —
a defining characteristic of the mineral.

This contrast comes from its composition:
iron within the structure oxidizes,
producing the deep red tone beneath the surface.

Hematite has been used since prehistoric times,
ground into pigment for cave paintings
and later used across cultures
as a natural source of red color.

It forms in a range of structures,
from smooth, polished masses
to crystalline or botryoidal shapes.

Today, it is recognized not only for its weight and luster,
but for this dual nature —
dark in form,
yet red at its core.
